About Me

“I knew who I was this morning, but I’ve changed a few times since then.’ Lewis Carroll”

I’m Birgitte Thoelen. I’m a HCPC and BAAT registered Art Therapist, workshop facilitator, educator, presenter and artist.

In my own life’s journey and professional practice, I value cultivating a way of living that focuses on seeing beauty in imperfection and holding the acceptance of change with kindness. In Japanese culture they repair broken pottery with gold. The ‘kintsugi’ philosophy embraces breakage and repair as part of the history of something. The imperfection does not need to be disguised. This concept inspired the creations throughout the website.

My work is about helping you feel more whole and connected, be more fully yourself in relationships, and able to feel your emotions without getting too overwhelmed or controlled by them. I believe everybody has the capacity and the right to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.

In my professional career (Bachelor degree) in the performing arts in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; I explored expression and form through movement. Later I obtained a Master’s in Art Therapy in Melbourne, Australia where other modalities such as visual arts, sand tray, play, sound, creative writing, sculpting and meditation were added to embodied experiencing. My work experience ranges from a workshop facilitation in the corporate sector, community and dementia care support work to working as an integrative therapist in acute and rehabilitation hospitals.
