What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy combines psychotherapy or "talk" therapy with the exploration of creative representations to delve into the subconscious to enable the expression of complex emotions. It is important to note that this type of therapy does not diagnose mental health issues. If the need for more specialized support for you is identified, appropriate referral can be made to other mental health professionals and services.
Through group or individual sessions, we can use drawing, painting, body awareness, mindfulness, movement/dance, meditation, creative writing, sculpting clay, music/sound, play, symbols and more to explore expression. This creative process enables access to new insights and provides deeper understanding in combination with talking, to investigate important issues and ideas in a holistic way. It can illuminate issues from a different perspective and can convey essences that words alone cannot express.
These creative methods used in a safe environment are empowering, as they draw upon your innate ability, creativity, intuition and choice, making ‘change’ possible. Its power lies in the act of ‘connecting and representing’ in the moment. Creations cut through the confusion and difficulties of trying to put words to complex feelings, making progress faster and gentler.
Sessions can be helpful for any age group, from individuals to groups, couples and families, for a wide range of situations, including (but not limited to):
Loneliness, disconnection, grief and loss
Stress, anxiety, burnout, trauma and depression
Self-esteem issues, negative self-image, sexuality, eating disorders
Mental health, injury, illness, learning difficulties and disability
Unfulfilling careers, unhealthy relationships, addictions and existential crisis
Lack of support, focus, purpose and direction
